Summary

Dare Chase doesn’t believe in ghosts。

Privately, she’s a supernatural skeptic。 But publicly, she’s keeping her doubts to herself—because she’s the voice of Attachments, her brand-new paranormal investigation podcast, and she needs her ghost-loving listeners to tune in。

That’s what brings her to Arrington Estate。 Thirty years ago, teenager Atheleen Bell drowned in Arrington’s lake, and legend says her spirit haunts the estate。 Dare’s more interested in the suspicious circumstances surrounding her death—circumstances that she believes point to a living culprit, not the supernatural。 Still, she’s vowed to keep an open mind as she investigates, even if she’s pretty sure what she’ll find。

But Arrington is full of surprises。 Good ones like Quinn, the cute daughter of the house’s new owner。 And baffling ones like the threatening messages left scrawled in paint on Quinn’s walls, the ghastly face that appears behind Dare’s own in the mirror, and the unnatural current that nearly drowns their friend Holly in the lake。 As Dare is drawn deeper into the mysteries of Arrington, she’ll have to rethink the boundaries of what is possible。 Because if something is lurking in the lake…it might not be willing to let her go。

such an excellent read! spooky, sapphic and full of suspense。 fans of the haunting of bly manor especially would love this。 perfect read for halloween。 also loved the representation of the MC having type 1 diabetes。

Waffles is the most ridiculous name for a dog。 And he’s not even that great of a character。 Kind of a dumb goofy dog who isn’t even a good service dog。 The type 1 diabetes representation was。。。interesting。 As someone married to an insulin pump user, I already knew all of it but the author keeps beating you over the head with it。 During the climax scene, she’s talking about her blood sugar levels yet again and I was like enough already。 She would freak out if her blood sugar rose like 10 points。 Waffles is the most ridiculous name for a dog。 And he’s not even that great of a character。 Kind of a dumb goofy dog who isn’t even a good service dog。 The type 1 diabetes representation was。。。interesting。 As someone married to an insulin pump user, I already knew all of it but the author keeps beating you over the head with it。 During the climax scene, she’s talking about her blood sugar levels yet again and I was like enough already。 She would freak out if her blood sugar rose like 10 points。 It didn’t add anything to the plot。 It was like the main character’s whole personality was diabetes plus podcast plus I like girls。 I also didn’t appreciate the shade towards type 2 diabetics。 I did like some of the aquatic horror。 The water leaking through the walls and imagining the house caving in was scary。 Also the ghost in the water。 But I couldn’t get over how they kept staying at that house when it was literally unsafe due to mold and not just the vengeful ghost。 I kept thinking of Wait til Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn while reading this。 The podcast plot was basically a throwaway。 We never see her working on it and there aren’t many episodes of it in the story。 。。。more

The Girls Are Never Gone is a YA horror book just released in September。 It was described as The Conjuring meets Sadie, and I actually think that was a really good description。Perfect if you enjoy tense atmospheric horror books that involve old houses and mysteries。 Good representation in this one as well, and I loved the ending。Thanks to @tlcbooktours @razorbillbooks @penguinteen for my copy。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really wanted to like this book more than giving it 3 stars, but as I got deeper into the story I just liked it less and less。 The main character's aversion to believing in ghosts, and how often the author made a point to remind you that she didn't believe, was so off-putting。 I kept rolling my eyes every time came up, despite the massive amount of evidence in front of her。 While I understand that's a pivotal part of the character's development, it was extremely annoying to constantly hear abo I really wanted to like this book more than giving it 3 stars, but as I got deeper into the story I just liked it less and less。 The main character's aversion to believing in ghosts, and how often the author made a point to remind you that she didn't believe, was so off-putting。 I kept rolling my eyes every time came up, despite the massive amount of evidence in front of her。 While I understand that's a pivotal part of the character's development, it was extremely annoying to constantly hear about。 I also had to keep reminding myself that the main character and her flame were young。 The love story that started immediately was frustratingly shallow。 I was really glad they didn't end up together at the end。 I didn't find this book to be very scar。 There were a few great points that made my hairs stand up, and then it would just fall flat。 。。。more

I think that the diabetes rep was a good thing- especially to have the character be a teenager who manages her diabetes very diligently。 Sets a great example。 As for the rest of the book。。。。ugh。 Very boring。 Not scary。

Simple, spooky, stunning ✨“The Conjuring meets Sadie” is what the synopsis claims but I am here to tell you that it is its own brilliant story and I absolutely love it。 I am here for it。 Like YES。 ABSOLUTELY 💅🏻💖 Our main character Dare is a terrific badass and I am all for it。 Her courage is absolutely everything。 She is one fearless lady let me tell you and she also suffers from type 1 diabetes which I find very interesting to read about since I barely read any books with young aged characters that are suffering from illnesses as such。 Her service dog, Waffle is the absolute cutest and I love this duo so much, they’re precious! ✨The haunting—though I find to be a bit slow in the beginning—was absolutely bone-chilling。 There were some parts that really sent shivers down my spine and we all know how much I love it when books makes me feel that way hehe 😋 There’s simply so much that I wanna say about this book but I’m afraid I’ll give away potential details of the hauntings and ruin the “fun” 😏 so if you’re interested, pick it up right away, it’s such a quick read, you’ll fly by quickly with spooks (not sparks!) flying ✨If you saw my Instagram story, you’d know how I said I was only going to be reading one chapter before bed and ended up reaching to chapter nine 🤡 That was how fast paced yet very much fun this book was。 The writing was so captivating and straightforward。 I do wish we get more peek at Dare’s “Attachments” series though! However, love love LOVE the book overall。 Highly recommended my fellow ghouls! 👻twitter ☆ instagram ☆ booktok 。。。more

The Girls Are Never Gone is a slow burn YA Thriller。 Most of the book is about the budding relationship between Dare and Quinn, and their quest to figure out the Estate's mysteries。 Small thrilling incidents pop up throughout the story, hooking the reader for more。 The buildup is finally rewarded with a wonderfully scary climax at the end。 Great for baby stepping young adults into horror。 The thing that really stood out to me in this story, is that Dare is a diabetic。 I think its great that the The Girls Are Never Gone is a slow burn YA Thriller。 Most of the book is about the budding relationship between Dare and Quinn, and their quest to figure out the Estate's mysteries。 Small thrilling incidents pop up throughout the story, hooking the reader for more。 The buildup is finally rewarded with a wonderfully scary climax at the end。 Great for baby stepping young adults into horror。 The thing that really stood out to me in this story, is that Dare is a diabetic。 I think its great that the writer is normalizing it within the YA community。 Yes, there is a little diabetic scare in the book, but it demonstrated how scary it is during a low, and how easily it was fixed by her peers being educated。 It was well written into the story, and didnt go unnoticed。 Another plus for the writer, is her including the LGBTQ readers。 The relationship between Dare and Quinn is sweet, and important to the story。 The house needed to be full of girls for the ghost story to work, and having a heterosexual relationship wouldn't have worked for the ending。 It was well thought out, and worked nicely。 The relationship will appeal to any YA reader。 This was a good YA Thriller。 Not super scary, or gorey, with the right amount of teen drama thrown in。 。。。more

3。5 stars I honestly should have loved this book。 It's a haunted house gothic horror story with lgbtq main characters, everything I could ask for honestly。 And yet。。。 I want to keep this short and sweet so I made a list of the things I didn't like: The Podcast I love podcasts in novels but in this one the concept fell flat for me。 There aren't really any transcripts of Dare's podcast and I found the scenes where she works on it pretty unrealistic。 She does a few interviews and records some of th 3。5 stars I honestly should have loved this book。 It's a haunted house gothic horror story with lgbtq main characters, everything I could ask for honestly。 And yet。。。 I want to keep this short and sweet so I made a list of the things I didn't like: The Podcast I love podcasts in novels but in this one the concept fell flat for me。 There aren't really any transcripts of Dare's podcast and I found the scenes where she works on it pretty unrealistic。 She does a few interviews and records some of the paranormal incidents, then she goes on to "quickly edit it" and slaps it on the internet half an hour later。 She's putting out about six episodes in like two weeks。 Editing takes longer than that。 We don't see her write a script once。 The book makes it seem like there's no work at all that goes into actually making a successful podcast。 The writing style It felt very juvenile to me, more like Middle Grade than Young Adult on the older side (the heroine is seventeen)。 The book seriously lacked atmosphere and we all know that a good ghost story needs loads and loads of creepy, chilly atmosphere。 It's vital。 It wasn't there at all and the potential of the stunning setting (a derelict old estate, a vast, murky lake) goes mostly unused。 The haunting I felt a bit cheated by "The Girls Are Never Gone" because it just really wasn't scary。 On the one hand, that's because of the lack of atmosphere。 On the other hand, it's because the actual hauntings seemed kind of comical because they were so tropey。 We have all the classic horror tropes and not much else here: Faces appearing in mirrors, "bloody" writing on the walls, shadows not connected to a living person。 This might be a good starting point for readers new to the horror genre but I felt like the book was wasting a perfectly good premise on superficial hauntings and。。。。 No backstory There wasn't much backstory to any of the hauntings。 I found this especially disappointing in the case of (view spoiler)[ Henrietta。 It's just said that she was an evil little girl who didn't get along with her sisters。 But why? What made her this way? What made her feel this so strongly she turned into such an angry ghost? (hide spoiler)] I felt like I never really learnt much about any of the characters, living or dead, either。 Everyone had like one or two core characteristics but it never went deeper than that, not even with Dare, the main protagonist。 There was other stuff I didn't love。 The insta love for once or all the back and forth in the second half when Dare suddenly believes in ghosts and then she doesn't again, she trusts Quinn but she doesn't but she actually does。。。 It just felt halfbaked and rushed。 I still think "The Girls Are Never Gone" is a decent Halloween read with an interesting premise, especially for readers new to horror, and I did enjoy the diabetes type 1 representation and how there are basically only female characters in this, but I also feel like the book missed a couple of chances to be really good (the podcast, the haunting, the backstory tying into what happens in the present etc。) so I'm gonna go for three stars。 It was an okay read but I don't feel like it did anything I haven't seen in horror a couple times before。 。。。more

I received this book from Penguin as part of their Influencer program。 I sincerely feel like Marsh just cheated me out of a really good story。 The Girls are Never Gone had a really intriguing premise, and its characters showed great potential, but I was quite let down by the actual content。 The protagonist’s disbelief cheapened the effect of the haunting, and the ending felt so rushed and half-formed that I could barely keep up with what was happening to the characters。 I wanted to enjoy the blo I received this book from Penguin as part of their Influencer program。 I sincerely feel like Marsh just cheated me out of a really good story。 The Girls are Never Gone had a really intriguing premise, and its characters showed great potential, but I was quite let down by the actual content。 The protagonist’s disbelief cheapened the effect of the haunting, and the ending felt so rushed and half-formed that I could barely keep up with what was happening to the characters。 I wanted to enjoy the blossoming lesbian relationship, but it was so half-cocked that I was simply annoyed that Marsh kept pausing the plot to talk about romance。 Overall… disappointing。 。。。more

Nothing really wrong with this, it just isn’t the best spooky ghost story I’ve read lately。 Reminds me of being a teen and reading all the old horror YA that I found in thrift stores。 Nostalgic for sure。It was a really fast read though, there were definitely spooky/creepy parts。 Good to add to an October tbh

This had a lot of potential that it didn't quite fulfill。 Partly that was the pacing and timing of the reveals - the boarded up room was discovered early and then ignored for most of the book, which was annoying, and so much more could have been done with the attic。 The other issue was that the romantic subplot simply didn't need to be there; it really just gummed things up and I found that I couldn't care less about Quinn and Dare as a couple。 It's a shame, because the concept is great。 This had a lot of potential that it didn't quite fulfill。 Partly that was the pacing and timing of the reveals - the boarded up room was discovered early and then ignored for most of the book, which was annoying, and so much more could have been done with the attic。 The other issue was that the romantic subplot simply didn't need to be there; it really just gummed things up and I found that I couldn't care less about Quinn and Dare as a couple。 It's a shame, because the concept is great。 。。。more
